Workers' strike stalls proceedings at Edo assembly

04 December 2013, 21:30

Benin - The indefinite strike called by the Edo chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday in Benin stalled proceedings at the state House of Assembly.

Workers in the state-owned public and civil service institutions, for the second day running, stayed away from work in compliance with the NLC’s directive for the industrial action.

They are demanding for better welfare package.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the assembly, reported that the premises were deserted by workers as the entrance gates were under lock and key.

NAN also observed the absence of the usual petty traders in and around the assembly during work hours.

The agency recalls that among the workers’ six-point demand are the immediate implementation of the pending salary relativity structure of 53.37 per cent for the state workers.

The union is also demanding the immediate payment of the balance of the 20 per cent consolidated health salary structure for health workers and the implementation of the balance of 10.5 per cent Teachers Special Allowance (TSA).

NLC is also asking government to address the non promotion of workers since 2011 and the immediate constitution of the board of state Civil Service Commission.
