17 July 2013, 10:05

Abuja -   Thousands of women in Yobe are poised to benefit from the State Women Economic Empowerment Programme.

State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Asma’u Kabir Kolo, said this was part of initiatives to uplift the standard of lives of women, particularly widows and other vulnerable groups.

The main focus of the programme, which will initially benefit about 3 000 women in the 17 local government areas in Yobe, would focus mainly on agriculture.

Kolo said to encourage women agricultural activities to improve food security and ensure sustainable development, government has approve N42 million (more than US$250 000) for poultry farming and livestock breeding.

A total of 260 women would benefit from soft loans to start up poultry production, while 400 will benefit from loans to start ruminant breeding while about 850 widows and other vulnerable groups would be supported with loan of N30 000 each to launch themselves into useful businesses.
