Ajimobi rejects Oyediji's claim to Olubadan throne

27 January 2016, 13:08

Ibadan - Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has dismissed as an exercise in futility, the quest by the head of Seriki family line in Ibadan, Adebayo Oyediji, to be installed the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Punch reports.

Oyediiji is laying claim to the throne following the death of Oba Samuel Odulana, last Tuesday, after about eight years of peaceful reign.

Fielding questions from State House correspondents after officially coming to inform President Muhammadu Buhari of the royal father’s demise, Ajimobi argued that Oyediji was not qualified to become the Olubadan.

He traced the history of the Seriki lineage, saying that the claimant was only entitled to be promoted to Ekerin and not Olubadan.

He said the beauty of the Olubadan institution makes it unique in the whole of Nigeria as it is the only institution where the next 20 or 50 rulers is already known.
