Ajumogobia rejects MEND appointment as negotiator

16 June 2016, 09:00

Niger Delta - Former Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Henry Ajumogobia has rejected the appointment by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, as one of its negotiators in the planned dialogue with the Federal Government, Vanguard reports.

Ajumogobia has sought to downplay media reports that he had accepted the role as negotiator between FG and alleged oil perpetrators regarding attacks on oil installations in Niger Delta.

He further distanced himself from the militants saying that he did not know the alleged perpetrators and at no point agreed to represent them in any negotiations.

News24 Nigeria earlier reported that MEND had previously called for an end to the attacks which had crippled the oil sector.

Ajumogobia says he was recently contacted by someone claiming to represent MEND, asking if he would be willing to participate in an initiative to end the oil attacks and bring peace to the region.

This being the only contact he had on the matter.
