Amnesty denounces jailing of students over Boko Haram joke

03 November 2016, 11:50

Yaounde - Rights groups have denounced the sentencing of three youths jailed ten years for sharing a joke about the Nigerian Boko Haram terror group.

Tertiary student, Fomusoh Ivo Feh (27), has been jailed alongside his two friends, Afuh Nivelle Nfor and Azah Levis Gob, whose ages were not given, following a trial by the military court of Yaounde´.

The court found them guilty of ‘non-denunciation of terrorist acts.’

Feh sent his friends a sarcastic message referring to the Islamic militant group that has killed thousands and displaced scores more in Cameroon and Nigeria among other countries in the Lake Chad Basin.

They were arrested in December 2014 and held in police custody in Douala before being transferred to Yaounde´ Prison in January 2015.

Samira Daoud, Amnesty International deputy regional director for West and Central Africa, said the trio should never have been arrested in the first place, as they were exercising their right to freedom of expression.

“Instead of being in school like their friends, these three young men will now spend years of their lives in prison for a simple joke,” said Daoud.

Daoud said the ruling was evidence Cameroonian military courts should not have jurisdiction to try civilians.

“The Cameroonian authorities must quash their conviction and sentence and immediately and unconditionally release all three of them.”
