Army chief justifies Shi’ites’ killing in Kaduna

20 January 2016, 10:12

Abuja - The Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai has justified the killing of some members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (also known as Shi’ites) in Zaria on December 12, 2015, reports Punch.

Buratai, who was speaking for the first time on the bloody clash between soldiers in his convoy and members of the sect, said his men acted within the rules of engagement in trying to clear the way.

Buratai spoke on Tuesday at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission in Abuja during the opening ceremony of the sitting of an investigative panel set up by the commission on the clash.

He stated that military men cannot just pick up their weapons and deliberately violate the rights of the people that they have been paid to defend and protect.

He said members of the sect held his convoy hostage for several minutes even after pleas by senior army officers to allow the convoy pass.

He noted that those accusing the Army of violating the rights of members of the group were insincere.
