Army issues court-martial to 20 soldiers over murder, arms sales

11 August 2016, 08:31

Abuja - The Nigerian Army on Wednesday constituted a court-martial against 20 soldiers for offences relating to counter-insurgency in the North-East region of the country.

According to a Punch report, the 20 accused were brought before a court for various transgressions, including murder and the sale of fire arms during the ongoing fight against terrorism.

Brigadier-General Victor Ezugwu, General Officer in Command (GOC) of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, claimed that discipline is the cornerstone of the military profession and that justice must be served in order for discipline to be effectively instituted, Vanguard reports.

"It is important that both the prosecution and the accused persons or their counsel are mindful of this fact and strive to shun all forms of antics such as request for frivolous adjournments which could lead to delays in the trial processes. It is often said in the legal parlance that, justice delayed is justice denied," he said.

In addition, the GOC revealed that over 100 officers had previously been tried and punished at Brigade level over acts of indiscipline and unprofessional conduct.
