Army threatens to use force against militants if dialogue fails

26 July 2016, 06:49

Niger Delta - The Nigerian Army has reiterated that it will not hesitate in using force against the Niger Delta militants, if dialogue to reach a peaceful agreement with the Federal Government fails, Punch reports.

Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, appealed to the militants to embrace democratic means in their demands and to honour a ceasefire agreement it undertook.

Buratai added that although the Federal Government are committed to engaging in a dialogue, military action was always the first point of call before any negotiations.

"Government is still committed to dialogue and whereby this cannot go on, then, there could be resort to other means. The non-kinetic (force) means has always been the source first before government can make recourse to the kinetic means.

“So, there is need for the Niger Delta Avengers to see reason and engage in dialogue with government," he said.
