ASUU shuns FG, Senate’s call to end strike

17 November 2016, 17:02

Abuja - Efforts by the Senate to avert the one week warning strike already embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday failed to yield any result.

The union has also shunned all entreaties by the federal government

A meeting between the lecturers and a Senate team, led by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Wednesday ended in a deadlock, reports The Nation.

Among the demands listed by the lecturers is the implementation of the 2009 Agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ASUU and the Federal Government.

The teachers are demanding an outstanding balance of N65 833, 047 372.24 (2009-2013) plus N62 417 645‚224.23 (2014-2016) amounting to an unpaid balance of N128‚250‚692‚596.47.

After the meeting, all entreaties by the Senate President and his colleagues to cajole the university lecturers to call off the warning strike fell on deaf ears, as they were hell bent on going on with the strike.
