AUN awarded for addressing conflict in Nigeria

13 December 2016, 20:20

Lagos - The American University of Nigeria (AUN) has been recognised globally for preventing conflict between religious groups and mobilising youth against terrorism.

The award lauds the university’s Adamawa Peacemakers Initiative (AUN-API), a local community programme that prevents conflicts between Christians and Muslims as well as using sports to prevent young people from joining terrorist groups.

Created in 2010, AUN-API was among three winners out of 244 entrants from 61 countries.

The trio won $10 000 grant to be used to further the recipients’ peace work, following the announcement in London (UK) and Washington (US).

Dr Margee Ensign, AUN President expressed honour at the recognition.

“We’re grateful to all members of API, our interfaith clergy and other leaders of API, but especially Abdulahi Bello, who coordinates our Peace Through Sports programme.”

AUN is located in Yola, Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria.

It enrolls over 1 500 undergraduate, graduate and nursery to high school students.
