Biafra protesters warn of more unrest amid youth leader's arrest

29 March 2016, 08:41Emeka Okonkwo

Abuja - The Biafra Nations Youth League (BNYL), has warned authorities the continued detention of its Deputy President of, Ebuta Takon, could spark more violence amid protests for the independence of Biafra.

The group reported the arrest of the campaigner on Monday following his arrest a day earlier at meeting held within Nigeria and Cameroon border.

“We have been peaceful and law abiding, so why this arrest and why now that our congress is drawing near?” queried President of BNYL, Prince Chimezie Obuka.

He urged the police to unconditionally release Takon before his arrest worsened the situation.

“It's not a crime that to agitate for Biafra, members of the BNYL in Cross River has every right to self determination as recognised by UN,” said Obuka.

The reported arrest is the latest in a series of tensions around agitations for the cessation of Biafra.

Fellow protester, Nnamdi Kanu, remains behind bars following his arrest late last year on charges critics say are trumped up.
