Biafra youths reiterate demands for Kanu's freedom

26 November 2015, 16:16

Abuja - The Biafra Nations Youth League has renewed calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the prominent Biafran activist, who remains in prison more than a month after securing bail.

The organisation’s Deputy National Leader, Eyam Esung, urge the Federal Government to release the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader “for the interest of peace.”

He is facing trial for charges of "criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an illegal organisation."

“So far as freedom of speech is concerned, Kanu committed no crime,” said Esung.

He cited double standards.

“President (Muhammadu) Buhari should remember he committed the same offence DSS is accusing Kanu of. Has he forgotten his threats during the
2011 Presidential election when he said cats and bulls will be soaked in blood if he loses and his threats of making immediate past President Jonathan's government ungovernable?”

“Why didn't DSS arrest Buhari for making these threats? DSS cannot designate Kanu a terrorist simply because he exercised his right of freedom of speech. No Biafran activist is a terrorist as far as right of indigenous people to self determination is concerned.”

On October 1, it was reported that DSS had arrested Kanu in Lagos.

The arrest generated mass protests across parts of Abia, Anambra, Delta, Enugu and Rivers States.

A day later, he reportedly secured bail after a secret arraignment at Magistrate Court,Wuse 11.

However, the bail seemed "controversial" and there were claims the DSS announced the bail only to calm the angry people of Biafra advocating for independence from Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Esung warned Northern groups allegedly threatening the lives of Igbos and South- south extraction in the North of retaliatory attacks if it goes ahead.

"We are aware of threats to attack innocent Igbos and South south extraction by some Northern youth groups. We will not fold our hands if our people, the people of former Eastern region get killed in the North.”
