Biafran passport rejected by US, UK

25 January 2016, 06:47

Abuja - Governments in both the United States and the United Kingdom have stated that they do not recognise passports being issued by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

This is in stark contrast to a statement made two weeks ago by Sunny Okereafor, MASSOB's National Director of Information, saying that the passport is valid worldwide.

According to Okereafor, the document costs N5000 while its renewal will set one back N2000.

Biafrans were urged to procure the document, going as far as saying that Biafrans would be more welcomed in Europe than citizens holding a general Nigerian passport.

According to a Punch report, however, the statements hold no weight.

Frank Sellin, Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the American consulate in Lagos, has revealed that the US does not consider the Biafran passport to be a valid document.

The British High Commission's Joe Abuku shares the same sentiment, saying that the passport will indeed be rejected.
