Bogus ITA agent appears in Kano court

Abuja - The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a Kano man for allegedly defrauding another of N500 000 in a visa scam.

It is alleged in March 2015, Aliyu Muhammad Wapa, paraded himself as an International Air Transport Association agent to dupe one Hajiya Umma Aliyu of Yakasai.

The money was said to be payment for the document for the lesser Hajj (Umrah).

The pair had agreed the visa would be issued to her within 14 days.

The suspect, however, failed to deliver on the terms of the agreement, and it was later discovered that, he was not a registered travel agent with the National Hajj Commission.

Efforts of the victim to recover his money were reportedly unsuccessful.

He pleaded not guilty when appearing at the Kano State High Court on one count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence.

Justice Faruk Lawal has granted the accused on bail in the sum of N500 000 and one surety in like sum.

The surety must have landed property within the jurisdiction of the court.

The case has been adjourned to April 7 for trial.
