Boko Haram displaces thousands in northern Cameroon

07 December 2016, 19:46

Abuja – More than 45 000 people have fled their homes in Mayo Sava, Far North Cameroon following the conflict waged by Nigeria’s Boko Haram.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported many are living with host families, sheltering in rickety structures made of salvaged material or sleeping in the open.

They mostly lack access to latrines or clean water.

Victims are sheltering in host communities that were fragile before the conflict, where over 80 percent of people live below Cameroon’s national poverty line and 38 percent of people are facing severe food insecurity.

The refugees in Mayo Sava are among over 3 million people that have been displaced by the militant Boko Haram group in its campaign to carve an Islamic State in Nigeria.

Over 20 000 people have been killed.
