Budget padding: Indicted civil servants resume work despite Buhari's threat

06 November 2016, 15:09

Abuja - Despite sanctions threatened by President Muhammadu Buhari on officials that smuggled foreign items into the 2016 budget and caused both national and international embarrassment, the officials are back to work.

Investigations by the Economic Intelligence Magazine indicate that the officials removed from the Federal Ministry of Finance have since resumed duties in the same Ministry without the highly publicized punishment the President promised while speaking to Nigerians resident in Saudi Arabia.

Buhari had in February while speaking in Saudi Arabia threatened to punish all those who were involved in the padding of the budget.

He had ordered that 184 top officials from the budget office should be redeployed for their roles in the padding of the budget.

According to the directive, which was issued through the Head of Service at the Federation, all affected officers were ordered to report to their new posts on or before March 10.

Asude the redeployment, Buhari also ordered the removal of Director General of Budget Office.

He also merged the budget office with the Ministry of Planning.

However, findings have shown that some of the affected officials have stay put in duty posts, disregarding Buhari's directive
