Buhari to present 2017 budget Dec 1

24 November 2016, 14:21

Abuja - President Muhammadu Buhari will present the 2017 budget to the National Assembly on December 1, Tribune reports.

Senate minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, gave out the information during a debate on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.

He told his colleagues that the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, had confirmed that President Buhari would be presenting the new budget on December 1.

The development is coming on the heels of the decision by the Senate to debate the 2017 to 2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and the Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSS).

President Buhari in October forwarded a request to the National Assembly seeking approval for a sum of N180.8 billion as a virement to fund shortfalls in the 2016 Budget according to News24.

The president said the need for government to augment funds in the federal coffers was caused by renewed militant activities in the Niger-Delta.

In a letter dated October 20, 2016 and addressed to Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara,  Buhari also sought the approval of National Assembly to borrow $29.960 billion for proposed projects across the country.
