Catholics say 800 Christians killed in Kaduna religious violence

12 December 2016, 12:59

Abuja – More than 800 Christians have reportedly been killed during clashes over land in southern Kaduna State in recent months.

Catholic Church leaders disclosed the figures this past weekend as they highlighted the extent of the clashes over land, largely perpetrated by nomadic herdsmen.

According to statistics given by the leaders, 53 villages have been attacked, resulting in 57 injuries, 16 churches destroyed, 1 422 houses destroyed as well as 19 shops looted and brought down.

A primary school and five cars have been damaged.

A conservative estimate of farmlands destroyed, food stuff burnt is estimated at N5.5 billion.

“In the last weeks and months, we have become victims of systematic attacks orchestrated by another version of Boko Haram, who also go by the name ‘Fulani Herdsmen’,” the leaders jointly-stated.

The worst hit Local Government Areas are Jema’a, Kaura, Kauru and Sanga.

Government and the international community have reportedly failed to intervene as attacks continued.

Christian leaders, undeterred by the attacks, vowed to resist attempts to the takeover of their land.

“Our Fulani brothers, like their indigenous compatriots, should seek better and modern ways of promoting their business. This should not be at the detriment and expense of our people.”
