Container crushes seven to death in Ramadan tragedy

07 July 2016, 15:37

Abuja - No fewer than seven people have been killed following an accident involving a 40-foot container in the Alakija area on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Wednesday.

According to a Punch report, a truck had moved from its lane into another before ramming into a commercial bus due to a brake failure.

The container that the truck was carrying is alleged to have fallen as a result, killing 7 people and injuring 12 more.

Biodun Solaja, an eye witness, observed that three okada riders had been crushed under the weight of the container, while several others left the accident scene with broken arms and legs.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a police official claimed that the slow pace of construction work at the bus stop where the incident took place is likely to have contributed to the tragedy.

“The electricity firm in Alakija was alerted to switch off power supply to the area to prevent electrocution because some electric poles were damaged. Heavy duty machines were used to remove the wreckage,” an emergency official stated.

SP Dolapo Badmos has since confirmed the deaths of only five people.
