Court denies IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, bail

01 December 2016, 14:31

Abuja - A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has denied Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and three other accused persons bail.

Justice Binta Nyako, ruling on the applications filed by the four defendants on Thursday, held that they were not deserving as most of the charges preferred against them were ordinarily not bailable.

She said the charge of treasonable felony, which hands on the necks of the defendants, attracts‎ a life sentence, reports Punch.

Justice Nyako ruled that though the case started de novo (afresh) before her, there were no new facts and circumstances that could warrant her to grant bail to the accused as the charges preferred against them were serious offences”.

She said as alternative to granting bail to the defendants, she prefer to order accelerated hearing of the case, reports The Cable

Nyako, therefore, denied them bail on the grounds that their case was sensitive to national security.

Recalled that Justice John Tsoho, who was handling the case before Kanu accused him of bias, had also refused to grant bail to the accused persons.
