Court dismisses Omisore’s bail plea

15 July 2016, 13:21

Abuja - An FCT High Court on Friday dismissed the bail application of a former deputy governor of Osun, Sen. Iyiola Omisore.

Omisore is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for an alleged N60 billion fraud.

The trial judge, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi in his ruling on Omisore's plea for bail said the application lacks merit.

In the application filed by his counsel, Chris Uche (SAN), Omisore said his continued detention without a formal charge in a competent court was a violation of Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution. Uche informed the court that Omisore was arrested on July 3 while the warrant to arrest and detain him was obtained on July 8.

But EFCC counsel, Takon Ndifon, opposed the bail request on the ground that the warrant of arrest and the detention order obtained from court permitted his detention for 14 days to enable the EFCC complete investigation into the allegations against him.
