Court fines EFCC N10m for detaining former PDP Chairman

09 April 2016, 15:13

Abuja - A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has declared as unlawful, the arrest and detention of former Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus.

The court also awarded N10 million damages against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

EFCC had about a month ago arrested Secondus over alleged corrupt practices.

He was accused of illegally receiving buses on behalf of his party.

Secondus had approached the court to enforce his fundamental human rights, which, he claimed, was infringed upon by the anti-graft commission.

In the motion before the court, he asked the presiding judge, Justice John Tsho to declare his arrest and detention as illegal.

Secondus also asked the court to award damages against the commission.

In his ruling on Friday, the court said, the first prayer of the applicant is hereby granted and the sum of N10 million damages is awarded against the EFCC.
