Criminals defraud in Defence Chief’s name

18 March 2016, 17:10Emeka Okonkwo

Abuja - The public has been alerted to the operations of fraudsters feigning Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, to fleece people of their money.

Rabe Abubakar, Acting Director Defence Information, said the attention of Defence Headquarters (DHQ) had been drawn to the existence of fake Facebook accounts being operated in the name of Olonisakin.

“The popular Facebook accounts created by some cyber fraudsters, goes by different fake identities and official photographs of the Chief of Defence Staff are used,” said Olonisakin.

The pervasive Facebook accounts have been misleading the general publics who have been patronizing the sites, he added.

“We wish to therefore dissociate the CDS from the said accounts and call on the general public not to patronize them. The fraudsters are using the CDS Facebook to extort money from unsuspecting citizens in the name of recruitment into the military and other sundry criminal purposes.”

Abubakar said the DHQ viewed this as a criminal act and efforts were underway to track and bring the perpetrators to book.
