Dasuki approaches ECOWAS to secure freedom

15 March 2016, 19:42

Abuja - The former National Security Adviser, Col Mohammed Sambo Dasuki, has taken government the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice over his continued detention.

He has been detained without trial since December.

His counsel, Robert Emukpoeruo, said the former security adviser was asking the ECOWAS Court to declare the detention unlawful unconstitutional and a breach of his fundamental right.

The applicant also prayed the court to declare action of government in keeping him in dehumanising conditions unlawful and violation of his right to dignity.

Government counsels objected to Dasuki’s case, arguing the ECOWAS Court had no jurisdiction to enforce the bail conditions because it could not sit as an appellate court to the Nigerian Court.

The hearing has been adjourned to April 11.

Dasuki was arrested for allegedly misappropriating funds meant for the procurement of arms for the military.

State security has defied court orders to release him on bail.
