December "critical" in the fight against insurgency

02 December 2015, 13:34Emeka Okonkwo

Abuja – The Army has described December a crucial period in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency.

This follows a deadline given by President Muhammadu Buhari to the troops to eliminate the Islamic militant sect by the end of the year.

“As we have entered the month of December, it is important to state that we have also entered a very critical part of the fight against terrorism and insurgency in our country,” said Army spokesman, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, on Wednesday.

The sentiments come amid concern the troops would not meet Buhari’s deadline.

While strides have been reported in the fight against terror-with the arrest of some kingpins and killing of scores of terrorists-the sect still carries out deadly suicide bombings particularly in the restive Northeast.

This past weekend, Boko Haram attacked troops in Gulak.

The troops killed three terrorists.

A soldier was killed at Gajigana during another attack.

Usman said troops were further pursuing the escaping terrorists and also exploiting to further block such kind of incursion through their blocking position.

“Consequently, we solicit for the continued support, cooperation and understanding of all Nigerians in this regard,” Usman said.
