Fake cop in trouble over alleged rape of 23-year-old woman

11 March 2016, 21:50

Abuja - A fake policeman has landed himself in hot water over the rape of a 23-year-old woman in Cross Rivers State, Punch has reported.

The suspect, Idongesit Effiong, was arrested by officials from the State Command on January 17 in Calabar and has since been paraded for his alleged crimes.

John Eluu, PR Officer for the State Police, has disclosed that Effiong allegedly committed the crime along with two other suspects.

According to the victim, identified only as Etete, reported the rape to officials who then took quick action and managed to arrest Effiong, who is said to have been wearing a fake police uniform at the time.

Officials have revealed suspicions that Effiong had been using the uniform to conduct crimes.

Investigations into the whereabouts of the other two assailants remain underway.

According to Effiong, however, he is innocent, insisting that the rape accusations are baseless.

The suspect has since claimed that he has never seen the victim before.
