High ranking Boko Haram commander arrested

16 May 2016, 14:16

Abuja - Boukar Kaou, a Boko Haram commander has been captured by a joint military task force made up of troops from Cameroon and Nigeria, The News reports.

Kaou, along with five of his lieutenants  was  captured, during a raid between  10  and 11 May  of the Madawaya forest near the border with Cameroon.

The troops killed  58 militants, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, a spokesman for Cameroon’s government said in a statement read on state radio.

No soldiers died and 46 hostages were freed, including 18 women and 28 children, according to the statement.

Three Boko Haram camps were destroyed and a consignment of weapons was found.

Cameroon believes the militants have resorted to suicide bombings because their fire-power has been drastically reduced following ceaseless attacks on their stronghold since December 2015 by an eight thousand-strong multinational joint task force with troops from Cameroon Nigeria, Chad, Benin and Niger according to VOA.

The United Nations reports that Boko Haram's six-year insurgency has killed more than 25 000 people and displaced more than 2.5 million.
