ICC summons AGF over soldiers, shi’ites clash in Zaria

16 November 2016, 08:48Lekan Oladeinde

Abuja - The International Criminal Court of Justice has summoned the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami over the clash between soldiers and Shiite members in Zaria in 2015.

Hundreds of Shiites were reportedly killed during the clash while the Shiite leader Ibraheem Zakzaky suffered four bullet wounds before being taken into custody.

The violence was sparked when a makeshift road block erected during a religious procession blocked the convoy of Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Yusuf Buratai.

The army later claimed Zakzaky's supporters tried to assassinate Buratai, a charge denied by the group.

Zakzaky's house and the group's mosque were destroyed in resulting clashes.

There were no official death toll but Human Rights Watch has said at least 300 people were killed.

The army denied the claim, calling it unsubstantiated.

The AGF according to Daily Trust is expected to jet out to the ICC on Wednesday and explain the part played by the military during the clash.

The Shitite, which seeks to establish an Islamic state through an Iranian-styled revolution, has been at loggerheads with Nigeria's secular authorities, leading to occasionally violent confrontations
