INFOGRAPHIC: Nigerian states are really broke!

08 January 2016, 13:09Obidike Okafor, News24 Nigeria

Lagos - In the face of  dwindling economic fortunes of the country and the inability of states to pay minimum wage, 12 states have effected huge increases in expenditure totalling N697bn in their 2016 budget.

Economy experts say the 12 states will run into funding crises.

In the breakdown of their 2016 budgets sent to their various legislatures as at last week, some of the 12 states expanded their expenditure by over 100% while still stuck in debt.

Even with budget cuts in 20 states the massive increases in the 12 states ensured that cumulative figure of N5.388 billion surpassed 2015 figure of N5.267.

This has also led to the combined budget of both the  Federal Government and the 32 states that have announced their budgets to be pegged at  N11.4 trillion

This year's budget compared to N10.3 trillion that was spent in 2015 .
