Lagos - The Lagos State High Court has sentenced one Ike Chukwu Meregina to three years imprisonment for fraud amounting to $45 000 (N14,16 million).

He was sentenced after appearing before Justice Kudirat Jose.

The convict was arraigned in May 2015 on two-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

A petitioner, S Securities Bureau De Change Limited, had entered into a foreign exchange transaction with the convict with an understanding Meregini would pay the Naira equivalent to the petitioner within some days.

Meregini allegedly issued a post- dated cheque to the petitioner and when it was presented, it was returned unpaid.

He pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge and the matter went into full trial.

Jose sentenced him to imprisonment without an option of a fine.

The judge also ordered the tracing of his assets and payment to the complainant.
