Lagos students urged to shun marriage, embrace school

24 May 2016, 20:47

Lagos – The National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Oluseyi Soremekun, has urged schoolgirls to complete their education to university level before marriage.

He spoke at the Bethlehem Girls College in Lagos during an interactive session with students.

“By ensuring they complete their secondary education and even university before thinking of marriage, the students will be contributing to the total number of girls that have access to and completed primary, secondary and university education,” said Soremekun.

He said by deciding to shun early marriage and complete their education, they would also be contributing to eventually ending poverty and hunger.

“If a girl is educated, there is high probability that all her children would also be educated and the multiplier effects of that on the nation’s development is huge,” said Soremekun.

According to the National Population Commission (NPC), the occurrence of teenage pregnancy in the country increased to over 60 million by the year 2015.
