Man to spend eight weeks in jail for attacking woman with knife

Abuja - A Gudu Upper Area Court in Abuja on Tuesday sentenced one Fidelis Godwin to eight weeks imprisonment for attacking a woman with a knife and stealing a purse containing her ATM card, N6,500 and two mobile phones.

Godwin of Durumi village pleaded guilty when the offences of joint act and extortion were read to him in court.

The Judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, however, gave the convict an option of N12,000 fine.

Kagarko said that the convict should also pay restitution of N6,500 to the complainant in addition to the eight weeks imprisonment.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Oyeyemi Adeniyi told the court that one Abigail Saidu of Salasi street had reported the matter at the Durumi police divisional headquarters on Jan. 20.

Adeniyi said the accused and one other still at large accosted the complainant on the Area 1 bridge and threatened her with a knife before dispossessing her of the items.

According to him, two handsets were recovered from the accused person during police investigation.

The offences, he said contravened sections 79 and 292 of the Penal Code Law.
