Massive immunisation on against resurgent polio

10 October 2016, 20:33Okoro Chinedu

Lagos - A large-scale immunisation exercise is underway after Nigeria declared a national emergency following the re-emergence of polio.

More than 850 000 children have been immunised during the past week.

The country is both oral and inactivated polio vaccines.

With the help of Rotary and polio partners, the immunization campaign is aimed at reaching 60 million children by December.

Health minister, Isaac Adewole, said Nigeria was determined to rid the West African country of polio again.

New cases, coming a year after Nigeria was announced as polio-free and removed from affected countries, recently landed Nigeria back on the list where the disease is endemic.

The three cases were detected in the northern Borno State, which was under the control of Boko Haram militants until recently.

“The new cases devastated us. Even one case is unacceptable,” said Adewole.

He encouraged sustained efforts, including domestic and international financing, commitment of health workers and strategies that reach missed children for Nigeria to be removed from the polio list again.

Government has allocated US$300 million (N94 billion) for the emergency response.
