Minister inaugurates committee on national defence statistics

30 November 2016, 21:33

Abuja - The Minister of Defence, Masur Dan-Ali, has inaugurated a Consultative Committee on National Defence Statistics (CCNDS) for the ministry.

Mr Nwodo Eze, the Director, Press and Public Relations in the ministry, said in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja that the minister also stressed the need for statistical data in planning and overall development of the defence sector.

Dan-Ali further stressed that statistical information was crucial for evidence-based policy formulation, project design, execution, monitoring and evaluation.

The minister said this was due to perennial security challenges that had engulfed the country in the last 10 years “occasioned by Boko-Haram, militants, human/drug trafficking, armed banditry, cross boarder unrest, especially in Niger, Chad, Cameroon.

“For Ministry of Defence to effectively and efficiently pursue its mandate in line with the present administration’s `Change Mantra’ for good governance and nation-building, there is the need to reinvigorate statistical activities of Ministry of Defence, its services, agencies, as well as institutions.”

He said it was in this respect that the Ministry saw the need to establish the Consultative Committee on National Defence Statistics (CCNDS).

The terms of reference of the Committee included identification of data sets of the various member agencies and developing the Defence National Statistics Compendium.

Others were to ensure harmonised and standardised national statistics and to facilitate the desired reinvigoration of the statistics activities in the ministry and its agencies.

It is also to ensure that the National Defence Statistics capture all relevant defence data.
