Mounting tension between FG and Avengers in Delta

18 June 2016, 15:12

Abuja - The Federal Government finds itself in a dilemma with the mounting tension in the Niger Delta region, as it tries to put an end to attacks on oil and gas installations, while opening a dialogue with the Niger Delta Avengers, Vanguard reports.

Due to the mounting tension as well as a promise of fresh attacks, Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa called an emergency Security Council meeting earlier this week.

Oil companies earlier today complained that it was difficult for them to continue operating under the threat of further pipeline bombings by militants.

The militants also ordered the oil companies not to repair any damaged pipelines until their demands are met by the government.

This leaves the region in limbo with the Federal Government having to find a common ground with the militants as well as restoring peace in the region.

News24 Nigeria earlier reported that Nigeria's military arrested 19 suspected oil militants in an attempt to eradicate the vandalism of oil installations.
