Nasarawa flooding claims 15 lives

19 August 2016, 08:38

Abuja - The death toll in flooding that has ravaged several areas in Nasarawa State has risen to 15, with scores more still missing.

According to a Punch report, a community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity has confirmed the figure, saying that the downpour lasted eight hours on Monday.

In addition, 36 houses have been washed away, with millions of naira in property having been damaged as a result of the flood water.

The development follows just two weeks after the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) issued a warning alert over imminent flooding in several states, including Nasarawa.

Yin-Allah Vundabo, interim Committee Management Chairman of the Karu LGA in Nasarawa, has since refuted the figures, claiming that the number of casualties reported to him remains at seven.

“The number of casualties we have at hand is seven while about 36 houses were washed away. We are still taking inventory of the property destroyed and the number of persons missing,” he stated.
