Navy nabs five for Niger Delta oil crimes

09 December 2016, 06:57

Abuja - The Nigerian Navy has arrested five suspects for alleged oil bunkering in the Niger Delta.

An outboard engine and two pumping machines were recovered.

These are among breakthroughs in the oil-rich but militancy-prone region.

In two different successful operations, the Nigerian Navy personnel on patrol in NNS PATHFINDER accosted two Cotonou boats loaded with suspected illegally refined oil at Onne anchorage.

However, the boats were destroyed and no arrest was made as the suspect fled on sighting the Nigerian Navy men.

In another operation, attempts to vandalise and siphon oil products from one of the intercepted vessels were foiled and suspects fled.

Three Cotonou boats were abandoned.

The boats are currently in the custody of the Navy.

Navy spokesperson, Christian Ezekobe, confirmed the breakthroughs.
