NECA goes to war with labour minister over mass sacking

14 June 2016, 15:24

Abuja – The Nigeria Employer Consultative Assembly(NECA) has been called unpatriotic by the minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, reports Vanguard

He said as a response to the reaction of the group after the federal government issued a  directive to banks and others to halt the mass retrenchment of workers pending the outcome of a stakeholders’ meeting in the first week of July.

According to Ngige, the position of NECA, an umbrella body for employers in the private sector, was not only irresponsible and thoughtless, but a bland knee jerk reaction borne out of self service.

According to The Nation, NECA  had earlier said  that  employers will still retrench if it becomes necessary and compelling, within respect  of the law, by discussing with the union (where one exists) including paying redundancy benefits to affected employees.
