New militant group Asawana Deadly Force of Niger Delta demands sovereign state

24 June 2016, 06:45

Abuja - A new military group, Asawana Deadly Force of Niger Delta has emerged in the region, throwing peace negotiations into chaos as it demands a sovereign state, Vanguard reports.

The militants are threatening to cripple Nigeria's oil industry across the 9 Niger Delta states unless the Federal Government grants them the establishment of Niger Delta Republic within the next few days.

The group made it clear in a strong worded statement by their leader that their motive was not money or the measly stipend awarded by the Federal Government.

The only aim is to realise the liberation and development of the Niger Delta region as a sovereign state.

News24 Nigeria previously reported that another militant group, the Niger Delta Red Squad had also emerged and made further startling demands to President Buhari.

Tensions in Niger Delta have risen considerably in recent times, with commentators labeling the demands by the militants as unreasonable.
