Nigeria marks World Polio Day

Abuja – The Nigeria Centre of Disease Control has restated its commitment to improve response activities in controlling polio , especially in the North East .

Chief Executive Officer centre, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, stated this on Monday to mark the celebration of 2016 World Polio Day.

“It's World Polio Day,” he pointed out.

“We join the rest of the world to reflect on the hard work that has gone into controlling this debilitating disease especially in our country where we got a major setback from the North East after a fantastic effort towards being declared polio free in 2017,”

He said the commitment of government, people and partners would not be broken.

“This time we are pushing further into those areas that have been previously inaccessible due to security challenges. We are determined to reach every child with the polio vaccine,” Ihekweazu said.

Ihekweazu added that the Nigeria Centre of Disease Control was working with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency to continuously improve response activities.

He remained confident ongoing effort would eventually eradicate the disease.
