27 November 2015, 07:44Augustine Osayande

Abuja - Nigeria and Russia are marking the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between two countries.

Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Oneyama, and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, have exchanged congratulatory messages on the occasion.

The ministers commended the Russian-Nigerian political cooperation and expressed their willingness to continue to work together to develop bilateral relations in various sectors.

These include interaction on regional and international agenda in the interest of their peoples as well as peace and security on the African continent.

The relations between Nigeria and Russia can be traced back to Nigerian civil war when the Nigerian armed forces received great support especially in military hardware.

This opened the door to a significant number of opportunities for developing a long-lasting, broad relationship in the security, political, economic and sociocultural spheres.
