Obanikoro regains freedom

Abuja -- Former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Obanikoro was released at about 5p.m. Friday according to a statement by his spokesman, Jonathan Eze,

The former minister spent three weeks with the EFCC.

Obanikoro was detained on October 17 after returning from the United States to submit himself to the EFCC on fraud allegations.

He was accused of receiving N4.7bn through the Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014.

Upon interrogation, Obanikoro admitted given Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose the sum of N2.23bn cash for the Ekiti governorship election in 2014.

Obanikoro said he personally handed the sum of $5.37mn in cash to Fayose while the sum of N1.3bn was given to Fayose’s aide, Abiodun Agbele.

Obanikoro admitted that the N1.3billion was flown to Akure airport in two chartered flights for delivery to Agbele.

Before his release on Friday, Obanikoro was said to have returned N100m and pledged to return N480m while his American and Nigerian passports were submitted to the EFCC.
