Obasanjo attacks National Assembly members

28 January 2016, 08:55

Abuja - Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has accused members of both arms of the National Assembly of corruption and extravagant wastage of the nation’s resources despite the harsh economic challenges facing the country, reports Punch.

Obasanjo’s accusations were contained in a letter he wrote to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

He accused members of the National Assembly of lawlessness and abuse of the constitution by overturning the recommendation of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission on their entitlements and emoluments.

Obasanjo, Nigeria’s President between 1999 and 2007, said Senators and members of the House of Representatives have been receiving huge sums as constituency allowances despite the fact that most of them did not have functional offices in their various senatorial districts and constituencies..

He noted that the recent issue of cars for legislators would fall into the same category.

He urged both chambers to open their financial records since 1999 for external bodies.
