Officer killed in terrorist attack in Borno

Abuja - A police officer has been killed and another severely injured during a suicide attack on the Borno State Government Secretariat in Maiduguri.

The bomber died on the spot.

Confirming the report, Army spokesman, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, said combined team of  policemen maintaining security duties at the entrance of the Secretariat intercepted and prevented the male suicide bomber from entering the facility.

He said the suicide bomber, named as Musa Usman, and in the process detonated the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on his body.

Usman said  18 people have sustained various degrees of injuries and have since been evacuated to hospital.

Troops have cordoned off the area and evacuated all workers from the Secretariat and reinforced security.

In addition, the Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) and K9 teams have been mobilized to the Secretariat for screening.

Usman said the incident had reinforced the need for more security consciousness and awareness.

“It therefore behoves on all and sundry to ensure that they are detected and prevented from carrying out their dastardly acts.”

Earlier on Thursday, two people were killed and scores injured after an explosion rocked the Musa Usman Secretariat main also in Maiduguri.
