Ooni of Ife's wife: I'm no fan of gender equality bill

19 June 2016, 13:15

Abuja - Wife of Ooni of Ife, Wuraola Otiti Zynab Obanor has said that she is not a fan of gender equality, adding that there is need to ignore the much talked about gender equality bill.

According to Daily Post, the queen said this during the just concluded Emerging Women’s Forum, in Maryland, USA.

"I am not a huge fan of gender equality. We can’t be equal, We can’t be men. We have our roles to play here, a very pivotal one," she was quoted as saying.

She said relationships of today were suffering because women wanted to be men.

This came as the Nigerian Senate in March blocked a bill seeking equal marital rights for women.

According to News24 Extra, the Senate Majority leader, Ali Ndume, criticised the bill, and urged Nigerians to stick with either religious or traditional marriage.

Sani Yerima, a senator from Zamfara state, condemned the bill, arguing that it was in conflict with the Nigerian Constitution.
He said the bill negated the principles of the Sharia law, which the Constitution recognized.
