PHOTO: Heavy rains wreak havoc in Abakiliki

13 June 2016, 08:32

Abuja - A rainstorm has wreaked havoc in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, causing widespread flooding and destroying crops and properties in the process.

According to Naij, houses, vehicles and roads were submerged as a result of the downpour on Saturday.

Many residents, particularly those living near water channels, lost their properties and were forced to evacuate as nature took its course.

The Iyi-Udele River is also said to have flooded buildings located up to 30 metres from the waters' edge, with some walls almost caving in as a result of the onslaught.

“We woke up to see everywhere submerged in water. In fact, I had to smuggle my children out of our compound. We were lying on top of water as our mattresses were soaked with water,” a distressed victim, John Oke, told Vanguard.
