Popular preacher to be hanged for blasphemy

06 January 2016, 12:04

Abuja - A popular Nigerian preacher is to be sentenced to death by hanging following his conviction in a Sharia court on a count of blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed, Naij reports.

Abdulaziz Audu, commonly known as Abdul Inyas, was arrested on August 18 last year, following which he was taken to Kano to face trial for blasphemy and inciting violence that led to the burning of a Sharia court.

Speaking at a Maulad festival held on June 31, the preacher reportedly made blasphemous comments against the Prophet Mohammed, leading to his arrest and subsequent sentencing.

According to a Premium Times report, five other suspects also received death sentences in June of last year on similar charges.

The Kano State Government has since expressed satisfaction with the sentences, saying that the judgement is a clear indication that whoever breaks the law will face the consequences of their actions.
