Rape of Nigerian refugees among biggest scandal

29 November 2016, 15:50

Lagos - Perpetrated by Nigerian authorities, the sexual violation of refugees displaced by the Boko Haram is among the biggest dents to efforts aimed at stemming violence against women this year.

This is according to Human Rights Watch, which rates the scandal alongside other disgraceful developments in other countries as Argentina, Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and even the United States.

HRW pointed out in Nigeria, government officials and other authorities raped and sexually exploited women and girls displaced by the conflict caused by the Boko Haram terror group.

Ironically, as the terror group is notorious for its murder, kidnapping and rape sprees, it emerged in October at least 43 victims had also suffered sexual violation at the hands of government officials and authorities.

Some women were reportedly drugged and raped, while most were coerced into sex through false marriage promises and material and financial assistance.

Many of those coerced into sex said they were abandoned if they became pregnant. They and their children have suffered discrimination, abuse and stigmatisation from other camp residents.

President Muhammadu Buhari ordered a probe into the scandal but thus far, nothing has come out of the probe.
