Residents call for demolition of Shi'ite shrine in Kano

24 January 2016, 15:03

Abuja - Residents of the Kofar Waika community in Kano State have written a letter of complaint to the State Governor calling for the destruction of a Shi'ite shrine due to reportedly dangerous activities taking place there.

In a petition to the Governor, residents submitted a list of actions to be taken against Shi'ite Muslims in the area, including a call for no resident being allowed to practice the religion.

The petition, dated January 12, has also urged government to either demolish or take over the Islamic Centre in the area, Naij reports.

The residents have reported alleged incidents of disrespect towards traditional leaders and those in authority, as well as plans to destabilize stability and peace within the state.

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), in reaction to the accusations, described the developments as a "blatant lie" given that the Islamic Centre has been in the neighbourhood for the past 13 years.

The statement, signed by Dr. Dauda Nalado, called on the Kano State government to disregard the malicious appeals, highlighting that the Islamic Movement has been tolerant peaceful for the past 40 years.
