Abuja - The Liberation Stadium in Port
Harcourt has been renamed the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in honour of the former head
Gowon created the Rivers State in 1967.
The State Government has also renamed the Old Aba Road
also in Port Harcourt as Yakubu Gowon Road.

The State Governor, Nyesom Wike, at a weekend meeting
with Gowon and officials of Nigeria Prays declared the Rivers State would
immortalise the former head of state.
The 81-year-old was Head of the Federal Military Government
from 1966 to 1975.
He created Rivers after a decree.
The state is the centre of Nigeria’s oil
